Practical tips

Know before you go

Small details make or break a Vatican visit. Here's what experienced visitors wish they'd known.

Essentials

Dress code

Shoulders and knees must be covered in St. Peter's and the Sistine Chapel. No hats inside churches. Pack a light scarf in summer.

Best time of day

Early entry (7:30–8:00) or after 14:30 on weekdays. Avoid Mondays and Saturdays, and Wednesday mornings when the Papal Audience fills St. Peter's Square.

How to get there

Metro A to Ottaviano or Cipro (5–10 min walk). Bus 40 or 64 to St. Peter's. Taxi from Termini ~€15. Tram 19 stops at Piazza del Risorgimento.

What to bring

Small bag only — large backpacks go to the cloakroom. No tripods, knives or glass bottles. Refill water at fountains inside.

Accessibility

Museums have lifts and step-free routes; wheelchairs are free to borrow. Private tours make pacing easier.

Photos

Allowed without flash in the Museums — but not in the Sistine Chapel. Guards enforce it.
