Skip-the-line vs regular tickets
The Vatican Museums welcome over 6 million visitors a year. Here's how to decide whether to pay a little more to skip the queue.
Side by side
| Regular | Skip-the-line | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price | €20 + €5 booking (official) | €30–€45 |
| Queue in high season | 1–3 hours without booking | Usually under 15 min |
| Timed entry | Only if booked online | Yes |
| Audio guide | Extra | Often included |
| Cancellation | Non-refundable | Free cancellation up to 24h on many |
| Availability | Sells out weeks ahead | Resellers often still have slots |
Our verdict
Go regular if…
You're visiting in low season (Nov–Feb, excluding holidays), can book the official site weeks in advance, or are going on the free last Sunday of the month and don't mind a long wait.
Skip the line if…
You're travelling April–October, have limited days in Rome, the official site is sold out, or you want free cancellation flexibility.
Watch out for
- Street sellers near the walls offering "no queue" tickets — buy only from reputable platforms.
- "Skip-the-line" still means a security check (5–20 min).
- St. Peter's Basilica is free; the Dome climb is a separate small fee.
- Museums close Sundays except the last Sunday of the month.
