Vatican dress code: what to wear

Plan suitable clothing for the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, including practical summer options.

The short answer

Choose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. The Museums’ official rules prohibit sleeveless or low-cut clothing, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats; dress appropriately for the Basilica too.

Start with the official rules

The Vatican Museums publish clothing restrictions for entry to the Museums, Sistine Chapel and Vatican Gardens. These are admission conditions, not merely a suggestion for photographs.

Avoid sleeveless and low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats as specified in the visitor rules. A conservative outfit covering shoulders and knees is the simplest way to plan across the Museums and Basilica.

Summer clothing that is practical

Lightweight trousers or a longer skirt with a short-sleeved top can balance coverage and comfort. Choose breathable clothing rather than relying on a heavy jacket in hot weather.

If carrying a scarf or light layer, make sure it genuinely covers the areas required and stays in place. Do not assume every improvised cover will be accepted. Arrive suitably dressed rather than depending on a nearby seller.

Shoes and walking comfort

Much of a Vatican visit involves standing and walking. Select shoes you can comfortably wear for a long museum route and the walk around the Vatican walls.

Do not invent a blanket shoe prohibition from informal advice online. Check the current official rules if you have a specific footwear question. For a Dome climb, suitability for stairs matters independently of the clothing rules.

Children and everyone in your party

Plan appropriate clothes for the whole group. Children still need comfortable outfits for a place of worship, and you should not rely on presumed exceptions that are not stated by the venue.

Check clothing before leaving the hotel. A spare light layer can be useful, but carrying fewer belongings also makes security and a long visit easier.

If your outfit is unsuitable

Change before arriving if possible. Admission decisions belong to venue staff; a tour ticket or a higher price does not override clothing requirements.

If your itinerary includes both the Museums and Basilica, keep the same suitable clothing on for both. Check the official visitor page close to departure rather than relying on an old forum reply or social-media example.
