How to get to the Vatican

Find the right entrance for the Vatican Museums or St. Peter’s Basilica and plan your Rome public-transport or taxi journey.

The short answer

Choose your destination before choosing transport: the Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano; the Basilica is reached from St. Peter’s Square. Tour bookings may have a third, separate meeting address.

Two entrances, not one

Searching simply for “Vatican” can send you to the wrong side of the walls. Use the Vatican Museums entrance for museum tickets and St. Peter’s Square for a Basilica visit.

For a guided tour, the meeting point printed on your confirmation takes priority. Some operators meet near their office or a street landmark rather than at the attraction door. Keep the full address available offline.

Metro from central Rome

Rome’s Metro A serves Ottaviano and Cipro, both useful for the Vatican area. Choose the station and walking route that fit your actual entrance or meeting point.

From Termini, Metro A is a straightforward option when services are operating normally. Check the official ATAC journey planner for current service changes and account for the walk after leaving the station.

Bus, taxi or walking?

A bus may put you closer to St. Peter’s Square depending on your starting point, while a taxi can help with luggage or an early meeting. Traffic and service changes make fixed journey-time promises unreliable.

From parts of central Rome, walking across the river can be attractive. Look at the complete route and weather before deciding: the Basilica-to-Museums walk around the walls adds distance if you initially choose the wrong destination.

Access needs and luggage

Check step-free transport arrangements rather than assuming every station or route works for a wheelchair. Venue accessibility and transport accessibility are separate planning tasks.

If travelling directly from an airport or station, consider storing luggage before sightseeing. Large bags can complicate entry, and the Museums’ cloakroom arrangements are not a substitute for planning your next destination.

Before leaving your accommodation

Save the ticket, meeting address and current journey instructions. Give yourself room for delays, especially if a late arrival would invalidate a timed booking.

For the return trip, decide whether you will leave from the Museums, Basilica or another Rome sight. Your outbound and return journeys need not use the same stop.
