The short answer
St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums have different entrances and visit arrangements. Check the Basilica’s current official access information; Dome visits and guided experiences are separate from basic church entry.
A different visit from the Museums
The Basilica is approached from St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano around the walls. A ticket for one should never be assumed to grant every type of access to the other.
Ordinary Basilica entry is distinct from paid guided visits and the Dome experience. Religious services and special events can affect access, so consult the official Basilica website before finalising your day.

Highlights inside
Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s baldachin are among the best-known works associated with the Basilica. Look beyond individual masterpieces to the scale, chapels and religious function of the building.
This is an active place of worship. Areas may be reserved for prayer or services, and barriers can change the route. Follow staff directions rather than treating every part of the church as an unrestricted sightseeing area.

Security and clothing
Allow for security screening even if you have a guided experience. A booked product should not be interpreted as permission to bypass all queues or checks.
Dress respectfully and check official clothing requirements. Covering shoulders and knees is a practical conservative choice. Organise your clothing before arriving so you do not depend on being able to buy or borrow a cover nearby.

Do you need a guide?
A guide can help interpret the art, architecture and papal history. Compare the language, duration and exact meeting point, as well as whether Dome access or other areas are actually included.
For an independent visit, choose a few priorities and leave time to pause. If you are attending a service, check the worship arrangements separately from tourist opening information.

Combine it without rushing
A Museums-and-Basilica day is possible, but both involve time on your feet. Check which site your booking starts at and whether any transfer or access arrangement is confirmed.
Add the Dome only if you have time and energy left. If you plan another fixed booking elsewhere in Rome, leave a generous buffer for security, walking and unexpected access changes.
